    1. Origins of Mother's Day

The custom of honoring mothers goes back at least as far as 17th-century England, which celebrated (and still celebrates) Mothering Sunday.

Mother's Day in the United States originated in 1872 with Julia Ward Howe, a writer, abolitionist, and suffragist who wrote the words to "Battle Hymn of the Republic." In 1911, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. In 2014, Mother's Day will be celebrated on May 11.

Indians widely describe Gandhi as the father of the nation (Hindi: राष्ट्रपिता).[11][12] The title "The Father of the Nation" for Gandhi is not an official title and has not been officially accorded by Government of India. An RTI query filed by a 10-year-old girl from Lucknow in February 2012 revealed that PMO has no records of ever according such title to Gandhi. MHA and National Archives of India also communicated of not having any records. Origin of this title is traced back to a radio address (on Singapore radio) on 6 Jul 1944 by Subhash Chandra Bose where Bose addressed Gandhi as "The Father of the Nation". On 28 Apr 1947, Sarojini Naidu during a conference also referred Gandhi as "Father of the Nation". The RTI applicant had also pleaded for Gandhi to be officially declared as "Father of the Nation" to which the MHA informed that Gandhi cannot be accorded with the title by Government of India since the Indian constitution does not permit any titles except educational and military titles.

Right to maintenance— Maintenance is a right to livelihood when one is incapable ofsustaining oneself. Right to maintenance forms a part of the personal law. Obligation of a husband to maintain his wife arises out of the status of the marriage. Hindu law, one of the most ancient systems of law, recognises right of any dependent person including wife, children, aged parents and widowed daughter or daughter-in-law to maintenance. The Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956, provides for this right.

  64. Here are 10 fast math strategies students (and teachers!) can use to do math in their heads. Once these strategies are mastered, students will be able to accurately and confidently solve math problems that they once feared solving!

    1. Adding large numbers
Adding large numbers just in your head can be difficult. This method shows how to simplify this process by making all the numbers a multiple of 10. Here is an example:

    644 + 238

While these numbers are hard to contend with, rounding them up will make them more manageable. So, 644 becomes 650 and 238 becomes 240.

Now, add 650 and 240 together. The total is 890. To find the answer to the original equation, it must be determined how much we added to the numbers to round them up.

    650 – 644 = 6 and 240 – 238 = 2

Now, add 6 and 2 together for a total of 8

To find the answer to the original equation, 8 must be subtracted from the 890.

    890 – 8 = 882

So the answer to 644 +238 is 882.

  65. 2. Subtracting from 1,000
Here’s a basic rule to subtract a large number from 1,000: Subtract every number except the last from 9 and subtract the final number from 10

    For example:

    1,000 – 556

    Step 1: Subtract 5 from 9 = 4

    Step 2: Subtract 5 from 9 = 4

    Step 3: Subtract 6 from 10 = 4

    The answer is 444.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 3. Multiplying 5 times any number
When multiplying the number 5 by an even number, there is a quick way to find the answer.

    For example, 5 x 4 =

Step 1: Take the number being multiplied by 5 and cut it in half, this makes the number 4 become the number 2.
Step 2: Add a zero to the number to find the answer. In this case, the answer is 20.
    5 x 4 = 20

When multiplying an odd number times 5, the formula is a bit different.

    For instance, consider 5 x 3.

Step 1: Subtract one from the number being multiplied by 5, in this instance the number 3 becomes the number 2.
Step 2: Now halve the number 2, which makes it the number 1. Make 5 the last digit. The number produced is 15, which is the answer.
    5 x 3 = 15

    ReplyDelete
  67. 4. Division tricks
Here’s a quick way to know when a number can be evenly divided by these certain numbers:

10 if the number ends in 0
9 when the digits are added together and the total is evenly divisible by 9
8 if the last three digits are evenly divisible by 8 or are 000
6 if it is an even number and when the digits are added together the answer is evenly divisible by 3
    5 if it ends in a 0 or 5
4 if it ends in 00 or a two digit number that is evenly divisible by 4
3 when the digits are added together and the result is evenly divisible by the number 3
    2 if it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8
    5. Multiplying by 9
This is an easy method that is helpful for multiplying any number by 9. Here is how it works:

    Let’s use the example of 9 x 3.

Step 1: Subtract 1 from the number that is being multiplied by 9.

    3 – 1 = 2

The number 2 is the first number in the answer to the equation.

Step 2: Subtract that number from the number 9.

    9 – 2 = 7

The number 7 is the second number in the answer to the equation.

    So, 9 x 3 = 27

    6. 10 and 11 times tricks
The trick to multiplying any number by 10 is to add a zero to the end of the number. For example, 62 x 10 = 620.

There is also an easy trick for multiplying any two-digit number by 11. Here it is:

    11 x 25

Take the original two-digit number and put a space between the digits. In this example, that number is 25.

    2_5

Now add those two numbers together and put the result in the center:

    2_(2 + 5)_5

    2_7_5

    The answer to 11 x 25 is 275.

If the numbers in the center add up to a number with two digits, insert the second number and add 1 to the first one. Here is an example for the equation 11 x 88

    8_(8 +8)_8

    (8 + 1)_6_8

    9_6_8

    There is the answer to 11 x 88: 968

  68. 7. Percentage
Finding a percentage of a number can be somewhat tricky, but thinking about it in the right terms makes it much easier to understand. For instance, to find out what 5% of 235 is, follow this method:

Step 1: Move the decimal point over by one place, 235 becomes 23.5.
Step 2: Divide 23.5 by the number 2, the answer is 11.75. That is also the answer to the original equation.
    8. Quickly square a two-digit number that ends in 5
Let’s use the number 35 as an example.

Step 1: Multiply the first digit by itself plus 1.
Step 2: Put a 25 at the end.
    35 squared = [3 x (3 + 1)] & 25

    [3 x (3 + 1)] = 12

    12 & 25 = 1225

    35 squared = 1225

    9. Tough multiplication
When multiplying large numbers, if one of the numbers is even, divide the first number in half, and then double the second number. This method will solve the problem quickly. For instance, consider

    20 x 120

Step 1: Divide the 20 by 2, which equals 10. Double 120, which equals 240.

Then multiply your two answers together.

    10 x 240 = 2400

    The answer to 20 x 120 is 2,400.

    10. Multiplying numbers that end in zero
Multiplying numbers that end in zero is actually quite simple. It involves multiplying the other numbers together and then adding the zeros at the end. For instance, consider:

    200 x 400

Step 1: Multiply the 2 times the 4

    2 x 4 = 8

Step 2: Put all four of the zeros after the 8

    80,000

    200 x 400= 80,000

Practicing these fast math tricks can help both students and teachers become secure in their knowledge of mathematics — and unafraid to work with numbers in the future

  73. HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR EXAMS

    1. Find out about the exam
Know your enemy - find out as much as you can about the exam. Questions to ask include:

How much is the exam worth to your overall mark in the subject?
What type of exam is it (for example, multiple choice, essay, open book, take-home)?
Will there be a choice of questions or tasks?
How much will each question or task be worth?

    2. Ask for help
Don’t feel bad if you need to ask for help. People you can talk to about exams include:

    teachers
    lecturers
    family members
    friends and fellow students.
If you’re feeling really stressed you might also find it helpful to speak to a counsellor. Our Student counselling page has tips for finding a counsellor

    3. Sort out your subject material
Before starting to review a subject it helps to:

check you have all of the handouts
    put your notes in order
read over any course outline or subject guide
write your own summaries of each textbook chapter or section of the subject guide.
Getting all your gear together makes it easier to find what you need while you’re studying.

    4. Review past exam papers
Get your hands on any old exam papers from the subject and familiarise yourself with the structure and format. Places you can get past exam papers from include:

    your teacher or lecturer
    your school or university library
the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (new window).
When reviewing, practise answering the questions within the specified time limits.

    5. Know where to go
Make sure you know where and when the exam is happening. You don't want to miss your exam! Here's how to make sure that doesn't happen to you.

Check your exam timetable for time and place details.
Do a practise run to find out how long it takes to get there.
Make a list of everything you need to take with you (for example, calculator, pencil, ruler).
Do some study at same time as your exams (for example, if you have an early morning exam, practise getting up and studying earlier in the day).

    6. Don’t cram
Staying up all night to cram will only stress you out. It's better to just review what you've already studied and get an early night. That way you'll be as refreshed as you can be on the day of your exam.

If you want to do some preparation the night before, keep it simple:

    get all your materials together
    read over your notes
    test yourself on key concepts
    set your alarm.

    7. Keep your cool
Fronting up to an exam can be nerve-wracking, but here are some tips for staying calm:

Don’t talk too much to other students before the exam.
Try to get there with time to spare so you don't arrive all rushed.
Make sure you have a decent breakfast.
Listen to some inspiring music on the way to the exam.
Wear your lucky shirt or bring a lucky charm (if you have one).

    8. Use your reading time
The way you use your reading time can really help you make the most of your exam time. Here are some ways to use your reading time well:

Read all of the instructions very carefully.
    Scan the whole exam paper.
Check how many pages there are.
Check how much each question is worth (it helps to spend more time on heavier weighted questions).
Plan which questions to answer first (consider starting with questions you're confident about).
Plan how much time you'll spend on each answer or section.
    Start thinking about your answers.

    9. Break the questions down
A great tip for any exam is to break the questions down to make sure you really understand what you’re being asked.

Look for the key parts of the question. These can give you clues on how to answer it

  109. How can we focus on our studies
    1. Get Some Sleep
Students should have a regular sleep routine and stick with it. Having irregular sleep cycles can really affect concentration and physical well-being. Try to go to sleep at the same time every night and get eight to nine hours of sleep. Your body will thank you in the morning.

    2. Eat Breakfast
Eating first thing in the morning provides fresh energy throughout the day, and it doesn’t even have to be a big meal. Something as small as a bowl of oatmeal can make students more energetic and efficient for the rest of the day, and foods like peanut butter, berries, and whole grains have even shown to improve memory.

    3. Turn Off Your Phone
One obvious way to maintain concentration is to avoid distraction, and probably the biggest diversion is the smart phone. When students need to funnel their energy into studies, turning off the phone or even putting it on airplane mode is a good way to centralize your drive and keep distractions at bay.

    4. Jump into the Fray
Go to the head of the class. While sitting in the back of a classroom may be the safest and most comfortable seat in the room, parking yourself up front makes it so the instructor is the only thing you have your attention on. Plus, it may help you understand key concepts better.

    5. Break a Sweat
Trying to concentrate in class will feel as challenging as a marathon if you’re not in good physical health. On the other hand, actually running a marathon may help boost your ability to concentrate, as exercise is shown to have many benefits for the brain. While you don’t necessarily have to run 26 miles before class or work, doing exercise in the morning can get your blood flowing toward your brain, which helps in strengthening the mind.

    The Bottom Line
These all-natural ways to pay attention in class sharpen the mind but also enhance other aspects of students’ lives. So while they hone concentration, they also allow students to have the energy and focus for other endeavors, as well.

  112. 5 Reasons to Study Mathematics

Apart from the obvious use of counting the cans of baked beans in your student kitchen, or figuring out how far you can stretch that last £20 of your student loan, maths is a skill which can be applied to so many areas. If you find Pi as easy as...well...pie, and have contemplated studying maths at a higher level, but still need a little more convincing, you should read our list of reasons to study mathematics at uni:

    1. Humanity needs Maths

Just look around. Some of civilization's most prized and proud achievements are wholly reliant on mathematics. Planes flying seamlessly through the air, high availability of complex medicines, even the computer you are using now: all of these increasingly vital commodities rely on the use and study of numbers. Take a look at some of the people who have utilised maths in order to further mankind's interests in the Top 5 Most Influential Mathematicians article. If you are to stop and think for just a few minutes it becomes inescapably clear that mathematics is pretty well inseperable from life as we know it.

    2. Potential for Joint courses

Mathematics is a reasonably neutral subject and so it is easily combined with other courses. Joint Honours like Mathematics & History, Mathematics & English, Mathematics & Spanish or Mathematics & Music are but a few of the increasingly broad range of Mathematics based courses available. This rich selection of study areas shows that a Mathematics degree does not have to be purely numerical, but can involve the arts to offer literary, musical or scientific nourishment. Furthermore, there is opportunity for studying abroad with many institutions, as you can see on our Course Chooser.

    3. Graduate Prospects

If you look at our subject league table for Mathematics, you can see that the Graduate Prospects are relatively high, especially if you earn a place at one of the top 10 institutions for Maths, they all have graduate prospects over 80%.

This high level of employability is strengthened by the fact that careers involving maths are typically permanent, in that numbers in whichever form they take are going to be around forever, and so money, computing and many other mathemtical fields are reasonably safe career paths.

    4. Transferable skills

A mathematician's skillset is not exhausted once they move out of the realm of the numerical. The facets of a student which are developed during a Mathematics degree are easily extrapolated to other situations and areas. For example, rational and logical thought is something which is required in many areas, whether it is in a moral or career capacity. Furthermore the high level of cognition required to comprehend complex mathematical theories and rules is an asset which will benefit an individual in many ways.

    5. Salary advantage

As you can see from our Graduate salary table, mathematics gradautes earn on average a significant amount higher than the average starting salary. As a main motive for many students to study certain subjects, the potential pay is a definite bonus factor with mathematics, helped by the versatile nature of the skills involved.

  113. Want to concentrate on study .. but can't so please try to follow this tips ~
Find a quiet workspace away form other distractions and make it into your study space.

Pace. I create a plan to study for 20 minutes, and then take a 5-minute break.

Simplify notes to few words. Then, on the test, it’s easy to expand on concepts.

Don’t keep re-reading the same notes. If they don’t make sense, I find other sources on the same topic to study from.

  114. History of National Mathematics Day

The great Srinivasa Ramanujan took birth on December 22 in the year 1887 in Erode situated in the city of today’s Tamil Nadu. He read mathematics voraciously and started developing his own research in isolation in the beginning. Srinivasa was an autodidact; he was a self-taught person and never had any formal training in mathematics. He first solved the formal and regular mathematics when he was 10 years old. When he was at the school, he received several merit certificates and academic awards.

Ramanujan has greatly contributed towards mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. In the year 1913, Srinivasa Ramanujan came in contact with the European mathematicians for further developing his knowledge and interest towards mathematics. He was also elected to various societies organized for the debate and discussion on mathematics. He started exchanging letters with the world famous mathematician G. H. Hardy and ultimately moved to England in the year 1914. He spent around 5 years at Cambridge and issued a number of papers during his stay there.

For his memorable and great contributions towards mathematics, the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan was declared as the National Mathematics Day in the year 2012 by the then Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. The year 2012 was celebrated as the National Mathematics Year across the country India for the first time.

  115. About Srinivasa Ramanujan

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 in Erode, Madras Presidency, now in Tamil Nadu. He is a man known for his work done in the field of mathematics. And that too with no formal training of that subject which others are getting in European countries. Ramanujan developed his own mathematical research in isolation. Some extraordinary contribution done by him in the field of mathematics are – mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Along with this, the legend has provided many theorems.

    Education
He was enrolled into Telegu School, but found it too tiring and uninteresting to attend school and mostly he use to ran away from there. Later in 1904, he graduated from Town Higher Secondary School.

He also received a scholarship to study at Government Arts College in Kumbakonam. During his studies he was so influenced by studying mathematics that he could not focus on any other subject and failed in all of them. This resulted him in losing the scholarship. Later, without any degree, he left the college and continued to pursue independent research in mathematics.

    Career
His unconditional love for mathematics was driving him to develop new things for that subject, but to support his livelihood he was working as a clerk in the Accountant-General's office at the Madras Port Trust Office. He kept working on inventing new mathematical theorems and continuously tried contacting the experts from west. G.H. Hardy, an academician at the University of Cambridge, recognized the brilliant work produced by Ramanujan and invited him to visit and work with him at Cambridge. Here, Ramanujan became a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Some of the known works, produced by this great mind, are - Landau–Ramanujan constant, Mock theta functions, Ramanujan conjecture, Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan–Soldner constant, Ramanujan theta function, Ramanujan's sum, Rogers–Ramanujan identities and Ramanujan's master theorem.

    At the End
Ramanujan died on 26th April, 1920, when he was only 32 years of age. His death occurred untimely because of illness, malnutrition, and possibly liver infection. In this short life he gave around 3900 results, mostly equations and identities and almost all of them prove to be correct and original.

  116. Pythagorean Theorem or Baudhayana Theorem?

Did you know that the so-called Pythagoras Theorem that the square of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle equals to the sum of the square of the other two sides was documented by the famed Hindu mathematician Baudhayana in his 6th century BC treatise called Baudhayana Sulba Sutra?

    Baudhayana states:

"The area produced by the diagonal of a rectangle is equal to the sum of area produced by it on two sides."

  117. significant contribution of bhaskara 2
The invention of calculations and progressions by the ancient mathematician Bhaskaracharya, under different heads such as Lilavati, Bijaganita and Grahaganita belongs to the 12 century. His significant contributions towards the mathematical world continue to leave a tremendous impact in the numerical field even today, retired Professor at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai Sudhakar C. Agarkar has said.

In line with the ‘World Maths Day’ celebrations held at Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan on Monday, the Professor spoke on squaring of numbers and other simple techniques discovered by Bhaskara II through a digital presentation. “Bhaskaracharya’s works in the field of mathematics aimed at providing solutions to our day-to-day life. His simple way of calculating basic multiplication and square roots help people connect with the subject in an easy format,”

    2. We can say these maths are very important for our life becuz this blog provides us maths which are related to our daily life.Life is nothing without mathematics and each and everything is maths in its own kinds. Maths is everywhere. We can learn maths from activities which mam had done with students of different classes, which is really wonderful. If you're saying why it is important then I wanna say
1 It helps us to have analytical thinking
2 Analytical thinking helps us to develop ability to investigate and know the truth of the world
3 It makes our mind sharp
4 It is just like any sport which makes us mentally fit or smart.

Mathematics is totally fun. So, a famous person name as MARCUS had said

"Maths have beauty and art. It's not a boring place to be,the Mathematical world. It's an extraordinary place. It's worth spending time here." And "The power of maths is often to change one thing into another, like to change geometry into language".
      For me it's really true.
